#1 state for ranches on market

Texas has long been known for its wide-open spaces, and the latest data shows the Lone Star State is leading the country when it comes to ranches for sale. According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texas is home to nearly 250,000 ranches and farms — more than any other state in the U.S.

As of early September, 7,411 Texas ranches were listed on Realtor.com, far surpassing Kentucky, which came in second with 1,641 ranches on the market. With the average Texas ranch spanning 511 acres, that adds up to nearly 3.8 million acres currently available.

Why the spike in ranch listings?

Experts point to several factors fueling the demand for sprawling properties:

• The “Yellowstone Effect” – The hit TV drama and its spinoffs have romanticized ranch living and inspired more buyers to pursue land ownership.

Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone, is himself a Texas ranch owner. His portfolio includes the 600-acre Bosque Ranch, the 179-acre Papa’s Creek Ranch in Wyoming, and part ownership of the massive 6666 Ranch, a 266,255-acre property east of Lubbock that even made an appearance in the show’s fourth season.
