Bexar County Is Among America's Deadliest Roads List

by Tre Serrano

A recent study based on 2019–2023 NHTSA data has ranked two major San Antonio roadways—I‑410 and I‑35—among the most dangerous highways in the United States, placing a spotlight on the city’s pressing traffic safety concerns.

According to Future Bail Bonds, which analyzed nearly 96,000 U.S. roads, these local interstates ranked:

  • I‑410: #27 nationally with 73 fatal crashes in five years—making it the 5th deadliest in Texas

  • I‑35 (San Antonio section): #130 nationwide with 43 fatal wrecks

These figures don’t even account for crash severity or congestion—but they do signal a serious local safety issue.

📉 Why This Matters for San Antonio Drivers

  • Daily Commutes at Risk: As one of the busiest loops in Bexar County, I‑410 sees more than 3,400 crashes a year, often at high speeds and during peak traffic times. Meanwhile, I‑35 through San Antonio is not only described as a "freeway without a future" but also ranks as one of the most congested corridors—especially the I‑35 stretch between Loop 1604 and I‑410.

  • Infrastructure Strain: Ongoing expansions on both I‑35 and I‑410 highlight efforts to alleviate congestion—but may also temporarily increase risks during construction.

  • Call for Safer Roads: These rankings bolster local efforts like the city’s Vision Zero action plan, which aims to eliminate fatal traffic crashes through infrastructure improvements and stricter enforcement.

🛠 What San Antonians Should Do Right Now

If you drive I‑35 or I‑410 frequently, here are key safety steps to consider:

1. Drive Defensive:
High traffic and mixed-use lanes—including trucks—can create hazards. Stay alert and avoid distractions.

2. Watch Construction Zones:
Expansions on these interstates often mean reduced lanes and shifting traffic patterns that demand caution.

3. Avoid Peak Travel Times:
Rush hours and peak holiday travel see sharp increases in crash risk.

4. Support Safety Upgrades:
Engage with community groups or write to your representatives in support of road safety initiatives like pedestrian bridges, medians, and expanded shoulders.

🏡 Broader Community & Real Estate Impacts

Safety on major roads is more than a commuter concern—it directly affects local property values and neighborhood development:

  • Quality of Life Matters: Safer travel routes make suburbs like Schertz, Cibolo, Stone Oak, and Shavano Park even more desirable to families and retirees.

  • Infrastructure Boosts Development: As Bexar County invests in safer roads, those homes near improved highways often see growth in demand and equity.

  • Buyer Perception: For prospective homebuyers, commute safety and road reliability play a key role—especially in fast-moving markets.

With two of its most-traveled highways ranking among the top deadliest in the country, San Antonio has a serious safety issue to address. While ongoing infrastructure projects show promise, community awareness and defensive driving remain essential.
