San Antonio has a new homeowner — and she didn’t have to lift a bidding paddle to get it. After 72 million entries, HGTV’s 2025 Smart Home Sweepstakes has crowned its winner: Cathy Everts of Eagle, Idaho, who is taking home a fully renovated $1.1 million estate in the Alamo City.

The grand prize package also includes a 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC Plug-In Hybrid SUV and $100,000 in cash, making it one of HGTV’s most lavish giveaways to date.

A midcentury gem with a Texas twist

The 1950s-era three-bedroom, three-bath home was revitalized by San Antonio’s KM Builders, featuring an open floor plan, skylights, and modern energy-efficient touches. HGTV interior designer Poonam Moore furnished the property with sleek, midcentury-inspired décor balanced with playful Texas flair.

Highlights include:

  • A chef’s kitchen with black quartz countertops and two-tone cabinetry.

  • A spacious living area built around a wood-paneled storage wall.

  • A basketball-themed media room, celebrating San Antonio Spurs fandom.

“This home is the perfect mix of fun, luxury, functionality, and effortless living,” Moore said.

A special moment for the winner

Everts, a grandmother of 11, has deep ties to Texas. Her late husband, Dan, is buried in Rockwell, where they raised their three children. The prize reveal came as a complete surprise during a family gathering hosted by her son, Drew.

“I was so excited to spend time with my son, and the hostess comes up, and she has an unusually big smile. When Poonam called my name, I knew something was up! My brain said there’s no way this is real,” Everts recalled.

Though she hasn’t yet chosen a favorite room, she hinted that the home’s custom smart basketball court may quickly become a family favorite when her grandchildren visit.

San Antonio in the national spotlight

HGTV’s decision to spotlight San Antonio in its annual Smart Home giveaway underscores the city’s growing national appeal, blending historic charm with modern amenities. It’s another sign that the Alamo City continues to be a sought-after destination — not just for tourists, but for families looking to put down roots.
