SAISD Finalizes Land Deal, Clearing Way for New Downtown Missions Ballpark

San Antonio, TX — The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) has officially cleared the final hurdle for the much-anticipated new downtown stadium for the San Antonio Missions baseball team. In a unanimous vote this week, the district’s board approved the sale of a 2.3-acre parking lot—considered the last key parcel needed to advance the $1 billion redevelopment plan along San Pedro Creek.
The site, located near the northern stretch of San Pedro Creek Culture Park, is being sold to Bexar County as part of a broader public-private partnership that will not only fund a new 4,500-seat stadium but also spark major economic growth in the area.
SAISD Board Vice President Christina Martinez called the deal "an investment in the SAISD of tomorrow," emphasizing how the agreement extends beyond baseball by providing direct benefits to students and families.
Highlights of the Agreement:
-
SAISD will receive two donated properties from the ownership group of the Missions, led by local developer Weston Urban.
-
A new parking garage—valued at over $9 million—will be built rent-free for district use.
-
The district will save an estimated $10.8 million on parking expenses.
-
SAISD will also receive rent-free access to another existing garage on Quincy Street.
-
The agreement includes temporary parking solutions during construction.
-
The district has secured a seat on the San Antonio Housing Trust board and event access to the stadium for school graduations and other functions.
The land sale bypasses a public bidding process by transferring the property directly to another government entity, a legal strategy designed to streamline the process.
Weston Urban, known for spearheading transformative projects downtown, is leading the surrounding mixed-use development expected to bring new housing, hotel rooms, and retail space to the area.
While supporters hail the stadium and its surrounding development as a downtown revival, some housing advocates have expressed concern about affordability—especially with the potential demolition of the nearby Soap Factory Apartments. As part of the final deal, the county has agreed to create a five-year housing plan by 2025, with SAISD participating in its development.
Construction on the stadium is expected to begin next year, with a targeted opening date in 2028. The stadium will serve as the new home for the Missions and host a variety of community events, further cementing the district as a hub for both education and entertainment in San Antonio.
