San Antonio-Area’s Garner State Park Ranks Among Top 10 Best in U.S

Texas has something to brag about Garner State Park, just 90 miles west of San Antonio, has been named the 8th best state park in the nation in a new 2025 ranking from HomeToGo.
The study evaluated 100 U.S. state parks for their affordability and visitor experience, looking at lodging costs, trail availability, wildlife diversity, and scenic beauty. Garner climbed one spot from its 2024 ranking, moving from 9th to 8th best in the country.
Why Garner Stands Out
Spanning 1,774 acres with 16 miles of trails and 2.9 miles of Frio River access, Garner State Park is a Hill Country gem for hiking, tubing, fishing, and swimming. Its iconic summer jukebox dances, a tradition since the 1940s, continue to draw families and visitors of all ages.
Affordability is another big draw. HomeToGo estimates nearby vacation rentals average $66 per person per night, while on-site campsites start at just $15 per night. For those seeking comfort, cabins range from $130–$400 per night, some complete with fireplaces.
Other Texas Parks on the List
Garner wasn’t the only Texas park recognized. South Llano River State Park, about 120 miles northwest of San Antonio, ranked No. 25 for its mix of hiking, stargazing, and nature-watching opportunities. Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, South Llano offers breathtaking night skies alongside nearly 23 miles of trails. Campsites start as low as $10 per night.
Additional Texas state parks also made the top 100, including Goose Island, Galveston Island, and Balmorhea, showcasing the state’s wealth of natural beauty.
