San Antonio International Airport Awarded $13.3M FAA Grant for Major Terminal Expansion

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) just received a major boost toward its historic expansion project. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a $13.3 million grant to support the next phase of terminal construction—marking another key milestone in what will become the largest infrastructure investment in city history.

The funds come from the FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) Program, part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The grant supports Phase 4 of SAT’s terminal development, which includes mass excavation, foundation drilling, and the design of advanced systems like mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and baggage handling.

🏗️ Part of a $2.5 Billion Expansion Under Elevate/SAT

This federal grant is a critical component of Elevate/SAT, the airport’s $2.5 billion capital improvements initiative. At the heart of the project is a brand-new terminal with over 850,000 square feet of space and 17 new domestic and international gates—designed to offer faster connections, improved traveler comfort, and room for growth in air service.

City Manager Erik Walsh called the FAA’s support “an important win for San Antonio,” highlighting how it will “strengthen our airport infrastructure, create local jobs, and meet the growing needs of our city.”

💼 Major Economic Impact: Jobs, Growth, and Regional Benefits

Construction of the new terminal is expected to generate an estimated 16,000 jobs, supporting everything from skilled trades and engineering to customer service and airport operations. The City of San Antonio expects the total economic impact to reach $2.8 billion by the project’s completion.

In addition to job creation, the expansion will increase partnership opportunities for local contractors, subcontractors, and vendors, bringing direct benefit to the region’s business community.

“The improvements underway at SAT are vital to the future of our region and will benefit generations of travelers,” Walsh added.

🌍 A Modern, Global Gateway for San Antonio

With construction now in Phase 4 and federal funding secured, the airport is one step closer to delivering a modern, world-class terminal that reflects San Antonio’s rising status as a major destination and economic hub.

Airport Director Jesus Saenz emphasized the broader vision: “This grant moves us one step closer to delivering a terminal that will also be a significant economic driver for our region.”

The expansion promises not only improved infrastructure but also a stronger connection between San Antonio and the world—making travel easier and more efficient for both residents and visitors alike.
