San Antonios Historic Tower Revamp

San Antonio’s iconic Tower Life Building is set to enter a new era. Renovations are now underway to transform the 31-story neo-gothic skyscraper, built in 1929, into a vibrant mixed-use residential community while preserving its architectural charm.
A Landmark with Histor
Perched along the River Walk, the Tower Life Building is known for its green terra cotta roof tiles, narrow windows, and whimsical gargoyles that overlook downtown. For nearly a century, it has stood as one of San Antonio’s most recognizable skyline features.
What’s Changing
The redevelopment, led by McCombs Enterprises, developers Jon Wiegand and Ed Cross, and Milwaukee-based J. Jeffers & Co, will convert the tower into:
-
243 apartment units designed for modern living.
-
Updated amenities and shared spaces to create a bustling community hub.
-
Preserved historic design elements that honor the building’s original character.
Balancing Past and Future
Community members had initially voiced concerns about losing the building’s historic identity. However, developers have emphasized their commitment to enhancing, not erasing, the building’s connection to San Antonio’s history. The reimagined Tower Life Building will blend the old-world charm of 1929 with 21st-century living spaces.
Set to be completed by 2026, the project marks a new chapter for one of San Antonio’s most beloved landmarks—offering locals the rare opportunity to live inside history.
