Target Plans Massive New Megastore on San Antonio’s Booming Far West Side

Target is setting its sights on San Antonio’s Far West Side with plans for a $21 million megastore — the first new Target location in the city in more than a decade.
According to recent filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), the retail giant is eyeing the southwest corner of Marbach Road and TX-1604 for a 148,356-square-foot superstore. That’s significantly larger than the average Target, which typically spans 125,000 square feet.
A Shift in Strategy
The move stands out because big-box retailers like Target have generally been pivoting to smaller formats, especially in dense urban areas and near college campuses. Some of these newer compact stores are as small as 20,000 square feet — about the size of two Cheesecake Factory restaurants.
While Target hasn’t officially confirmed the San Antonio project, TDLR filings usually signal serious intent. “We are continually evaluating potential store locations to serve new guests, but I don’t have any new-store news to share at this time,” a spokesperson said via email.
Why the Far West Side?
San Antonio’s Far West Side has been one of the city’s fastest-growing regions, drawing in major residential and commercial projects such as Portico at Schaenfield Ranch. The new Target would serve as an anchor for an upcoming development, although full details have yet to be released.
If the project moves forward, it would be the city’s first new Target store since 2012, marking a major retail comeback after two local closures in the past decade. Target currently operates 14 locations across San Antonio.
Project Timeline
Based on the state filing, construction could wrap up by March 2027. While companies like Target often keep project details under wraps until much closer to opening, the filing indicates a significant investment in San Antonio’s retail future.
