The Holy Grail of San Antonio Barbecue: An Ode to Reese Bros Barbecue

One thing that connects true Texans to one another, other than H-E-B and football, is barbecue. Appreciating good food seems to be a love language nowadays and rightfully so since everyone has gained a few pounds during the pandemic. Nick and Elliott Reese may have played a part in this because they own one of the best barbecue spots in San Antonio.

Prior to establishing their brick and mortar and food truck location in Alamo City, the brothers spent years serving barbecue in the town of Marathon. Marathon is a small West Texas town where the brothers worked the pits at Brick Vault Brewery and BBQ in 2018.  Eventually, the duo decided it was time to come back home and grow their company and brand in a place that has always felt like home.

With the help of Jorge Flores, Gabriel Perez, and their other employees, Reese Bros Barbecue has accomplished their goal of serving the people of San Antonio with familiar options and flavors they love eating. One of the menu items that you won’t see anywhere else is their poblano mac and cheese that was inspired by Jorge’s childhood memories of eating his aunt’s arroz poblano. The okra beans and potato salad with poblanos is no different with its San Antonio inspired flavors that everyone can enjoy

The sides are important but let’s get to the main attraction—the meat. According to everything I’ve seen and heard, the brisket is thickly sliced pieces of heaven, the rib/sausage combo is unmatched, and the queso fundido sausage is perfection. If you do want to indulge in such goodness, you do have to get there early or you risk the chance of getting there with your intended selection crossed out and sold out.

This may be the only barbeque spot that serves a side or tortillas and jalapeños with your barbecue instead of bread. The premise is the same but I’m curious to see how all the bold flavors mesh with the delicacy of the tortilla. A little heat hasn’t hurt anybody and you sure will get your share of it with the jalapeños and the hints of spicy seasonings on the meat and macaroni.

Oftentimes restaurant owners aren’t praised enough for their hard work, creativity, and contribution to their community. So, if you haven’t had Reese Bros Barbecue, I would highly recommend taking your family to support this local business by grubbing on some BBQ. And if you have already gone then there is no shame in seconds!
