by Tre Serrano

The San Antonio beer scene is always bubbling with reasons to gather with friends and raise a glass. From lively Oktoberfest celebrations to a bold new collaboration coming out of the Hill Country, here’s what every beer lover needs to know this season.

Prost to Festival Season 🎉

As summer winds down and fall arrives, breweries across San Antonio and the Hill Country are gearing up for Oktoberfest. Expect plenty of German-style brews, hearty food, live music, and good old-fashioned stein-holding contests.

Here are a few can’t-miss events:

  • Longtab Brewing (Sept. 26–28) – Special German menu, stein-holding contest, and live music from Fiesta favorite The TubaMeisters.

  • Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling (Sept. 27) – Pair German classics from Schnitzel Box with music and beer garden fun.

  • Künstler Brewing (Sept. 27–28) – Celebrate German culture with schnitzel-on-a-stick, sausage, raffles, and house-brewed specialties.

  • Five Stones Artisan Brewery (Sept. 28) – Braunfelser Fest brings new German-inspired releases, local vendors, and artisan food.

  • New Braunfels Brewing Co. (Oct. 18) – Details still to come, but expect live music and a signature stein-holding competition.

  • Altstadt Brewery (Oct. 18) – A Fredericksburg classic: food, live oom-pah music, and games.

  • Back Unturned Brewing (Oct. 25) – Backtoberfest includes three full pours, a souvenir mug, and festive Alpine vibes.

  • Star Republic Brewing (Oct. 25) – This newcomer near Spring Branch is hosting its very first Oktoberfest, complete with schnitzel, sausage, hayrides, polka, and even a petting zoo.

A Collaboration That Gets Weird 🍺

Meanwhile, two Hill Country favorites — Free Roam Brewing Co. (Boerne) and Altstadt Brewery (Fredericksburg) — have teamed up for something a little different. Their new creation, Dos Fríos, is a double cold IPA brewed at lower fermentation temperatures for a bold and crisp finish.

Made with Anchovy and Strata hops, the beer delivers notes of marmalade, citrus, and some uniquely “dank” undertones. It’s not for everyone — as one Untappd reviewer put it: “Yo, I love you guys, but these hops are weird.”
