What the Spurs Will Pay for a New Downtown Arena

by Tre Serrano

Big changes could be coming to downtown San Antonio — and the Spurs are ready to put serious money on the table to make it happen.

The Spurs recently announced they’re willing to contribute $500 million toward the development of a new arena downtown. That’s one-third of the estimated $1.5 billion price tag — a significant commitment meant to move the conversation forward after months of waiting on details.

Beyond Basketball: A Community Investment

The Spurs aren’t just investing in a new home court. They’re also planning:

  • $60 million for initiatives like community tickets and event transportation.

  • $35 million over 20 years for childhood education programs — including converting 10 closed schools into early learning and child care centers.

  • Matching employee contributions toward child care.

  • Support for Pre-K 4 SA, a key campaign idea of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones.

What the City Might Pay

City officials have said they may contribute $350 million to $500 million, tapping into:

  • Hotel-related taxes over 30 years (sales and room taxes).

  • Bexar County’s venue tax (hotel and rental car taxes).

  • A potential $250 million voter-approved bond to fund surrounding infrastructure.

What’s Next?

The proposed arena would sit at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) site and anchor a bigger entertainment district, including:

  • A convention center remodel

  • A new event space at the former federal courthouse

  • Improvements around Hemisfair

The Spurs’ current lease at the Frost Bank Center ends in 2032, and the team has said they’re not interested in renewing it.

City and county officials have until August 18 to call for a November election to approve funding measures — and community feedback is already heating up.
